Cibernet was born of the need for cellular mobile companies to have financial settlement in place with each other for Cellular Roaming; where a subscriber of one wireless service provider uses the facilities of another wireless service provider.
In allowing visiting subscribers this ability to ‘roam’, the wireless service providers need to exchange call records in order to pay each other at a wholesale level for the service provided. Additionally, billing information is required to invoice the subscriber at the retail level. The protocol developed to facilitate this function called CIBER Roaming Settlement System (also known as financial clearing and settlement); has been developed and provided as a service by the CTIA to its members.
Out of this function has grown a number of commercial products initially offered and managed by Cibernet. Originally just for the CDMA world, SID’s are now used in the GSM world as well, particularly in North America.
