MACH connects swisscom subscribers to over 25,000 global wireless hotspots

Publication: 13.07.2006

Switzerland’s leading mobile operator will use MACH’s Wireless Roaming Intermediary eXchange service, which complies with the standards defined by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA). The service gives Swisscom subscribers easy and secure access to Swisscom Mobile’s growing national WLAN network, as well as to the footprint of the WBA members when travelling abroad. Similarly, WBA members will have access to the hotspots in the Swisscom Mobile domestic WLAN network.

MACH’s total solution for Swisscom Mobile includes RADIUS interconnect, wholesale data and financial clearing services for inter-operator settlement. As part of the solution Swisscom Mobile will have a single RADIUS interconnection point to all 26 members in the WBA. The WBA is a telecom operator led industry alliance working to create a common commercial, technical and marketing framework for wireless network interoperability.

Tommy Bertling, Senior Product Manager Wireless LAN of Swisscom Mobile remarked: “Currently, the WLAN industry lacks the same standards prevalent within the GSM industry and the WBA has taken significant steps to help standardise the service.

“MACH was a natural vendor choice to us as a WBA member, its WLAN team has played a significant role in defining the standards and its solution is fully WBA compliant. On top of this, our requirements for a Swisscom-branded solution that could achieve fast time to market and be scalable to allow us to grow the service have been met as well”, he added.

Martin Lippert, CEO of MACH said: “WLAN is no longer considered to be solely for the use of business travellers, it is now almost a necessity for many holidaymakers. However despite the growth in demand operators have faced a number of challenges, even to the extent of losing out on revenues owed to them. Using our expertise in mobile roaming, MACH is able to provide operators with both the technology and access to a best practise business model to help them secure those additional revenue streams.”
